What Baptism Symbolizes

Baptism symbolizes that you have accepted Christ as your Lord and Savior, that your old life has been put to death, and that you have new life in Jesus Christ. Baptism is an act of obedience since Jesus instructed us to be baptized, and it also shows others that you have entered into a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Matthew 28:19, 20 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

The Method of Baptism

Baptism can sometimes seem confusing, but the Bible clearly shows us the method to use. Baptism is a picture of our identification with Christ through His death, burial and resurrection. The word "baptize" in the New Testament translates to mean "immerse," "submerge," or "to place under." Scripture says that Jesus "came up out of the water" when he was baptized.

At Greater Second, we immerse believers when they are baptized because we believe Scripture shows that Jesus modeled that as the way for us to publicly acknowledge our faith in Him.

Mark 1:9-11 And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan. And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him: And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

Is Baptism Required For Church Membership?

At Greater Second, we require those who have not been baptized by immersion to be baptized. We do not want to question a person's salvation experience or diminish his or her Christian heritage, but we want to unite our membership in belief and practice.

The Baptism Process
    1.   Speak to one of our ministers personally or respond to an invitation at the end of one of our worship services to express your desire to be baptized.
    2.   Someone will contact you to schedule your baptism.
    3.   Your baptism will take place at the scheduled date and time.
